most of you will of course be familiar with the work of john
stevens, the iconocatalyst of free european improvisation. if not
or to find more information (including discographical details on
more than 70 physical pages) please visit the home of european free
improvisation and find yourself awestruck. dick heckstall-smith is
best known for his rather conventional work with colosseum, though,
but having played with alexis korner, graham bond, jack bruce and
john mayall in most cases he created some at least interesting if
not surmounting conventional interesterritoring rhizomatic
bypasses. an unanticipated meeting of these two protagonists thus
should and must have been rather interesting and indeed it was.
john stevens and dick heckstall-smith met in london in 1993 to
record some 40 minutes of free improvised music to be released on
the german label konnex/dossier/atonal the same year, and though
you can still find some john stevens music in their mailoerder
catalogue at ridicilous low prices: the album bird in widnes is
