#13 Energiewende in der Industrie – mit Holger Borcherding und Birthe Bittner

In dieser Episode von Light Talks, dem Podcast der Zumtobel
Group, geht es um das mögliche Potenzial von Gleichstrom in der
Industrie als Impuls für ein Vorankommen in der Energiewende.
Thematisiert wird auch die DC Alliance als diesbezügliche
Initiative sowie ein erstes Pilotprojekt von Zumtobel. Online zu
Gast ist Professor Holger Borcherding, auch Gründervater der
„Gleichstromfabrik“. Er ist Leiter der Forschergruppe
Leistungselektronik in der Technischen Hochschule Ostwestfalen
Lippe sowie in Kooperation fachlicher Leiter des
Forschungsbereichs Innovation der Lenze SE. Von Zumtobel mit
dabei ist Birthe Bittner, Head of Application Management
Industry. Moderiert wird das Gespräch von Diana Panzirsch.


Die Runde spricht darüber, dass Gleichstrom von Natur aus gegeben
ist – etwa beim Zitteraal, der selbst 600 Volt Gleichstrom
erzeugt – und erläutert seine Vorteile im Vergleich zu dem vor
über 130 Jahren vom Menschen erfundenen Wechselstrom. Einen
besonderen Einblick gibt es hier in puncto Energieeffizienz,
Kosteneinsparungen und Sicherheit. Außerdem diskutieren die
Experten, wie Gleichstrom dazu beitragen kann, die Stabilität des
Netzes zu verbessern und welche Rolle dies hinsichtlich eines
Blackouts spielen könnte. Im Gespräch wird zudem die DC Alliance
beleuchtet, eine Initiative, an der Zumtobel seit 2023 beteiligt
ist. Diese arbeitet aktiv an der Etablierung eines
Industriestandards für den Einsatz von Gleichstrom. Denn im
Vergleich zu 130 Jahren Wechselstrom steckt die
Gleichstrom-Initiative noch in den Anfängen. Zusätzlich wird auf
das gemeinsame Pilotprojekt von Zumtobel mit Mercedes
hingewiesen. Mit der DC Alliance arbeitet Zumtobel aktuell an
einem Standardprodukt, das auf der Nutzung von Gleichstrom
basiert. Zum Erleben gibt es den momentanen Entwicklungsstand in
der Zusammenarbeit auf der Light + Building in Frankfurt am
Zumtobel Group Stand vom 5. bis 8. März 2024. 


Episode 13 of Light Talks focuses on the potential of direct
current in industry as a driver in advancing the energy
transition. One of the topics discussed is the DC Alliance, an
initiative in this context and a first pilot project of Zumtobel.
Joining online is Professor Holger Borcherding, founding father
of the “DC factory”. He is the head of the power electronics
research group at the OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts
(TH OWL) and technical head of the “Innovation” research area at
Lenze SE, which cooperates with TH OWL. Birthe Bittner, Head of
Application Management Industry, represents Zumtobel in the
conversation, which is hosted by Diana Panzirsch.


The participants talk about the fact that direct current occurs
in nature –the electric eel, for example, produces 600 volts of
direct current – and explain its advantages in comparison with
alternating current, which was invented over 130 years ago.
Special insights are given in terms of energy efficiency, cost
savings and safety. In addition, the experts discuss how direct
current can contribute to improving the stability of the power
grid and which role this could play in connection with a
blackout. The DC Allicance is also presented in the conversation:
this initiative, which Zumtobel joined in 2023, is working on the
establishment of an industry standard for the use of direct
current. Compared with alternating current, which has been used
for 130 years, the direct current initiative still stands at the
beginning. The joint pilot project of Zumtobel and Mercedes is
also addressed. Zumtobel is currently working on a standard
product based on the use of direct current with the DC Alliance.
