Language shapes how we think and feel, and how we perceive
ourselves and others. Language can create community that even
changes the world. Just think of Martin Luther King's famous words
'I have a dream'. Words can be uplifting or humiliating, can bring
us together or apart, can encourage or can exclude and
discriminate. On the job, the tone has often become much harsher
and characterized by demanding, threatening, condemning and
denying. In some places, politeness is labeled as do-gooding. In
addition, there are behaviors that prevent women and people with
other mother tongues, in particular, from contributing fully.
Sitting at the table does not automatically mean being included.
This episode is about raising awareness of the impact of language.
It addresses the following questions: How does discriminatory or
offensive language emerge? What does speechlessness mean? Is really
everyone included? What prevents people from contributing equally?
How can you use language in a way that motivates and includes as
many people as possible? What can you do so that no one in your
environment remains speechless? My recommended reading: 'Language
and Being' by Kübra Gümüsay. The author describes in an impressive
way how language shapes our thinking and living and determines our
politics. I am looking forward to your suggestions, feedback,
criticism and questions about the podcast. You can find my contact
