Because of increasing aesthetic demands and the discussion about
amalgam, composites are used more and more to restore posterior
teeth. Packable composites and ormocers are discussed as better
alternatives for amalgam as stress-bearing posterior restorations
when compared to traditional hybrid composites. Aim of the study
was to determine adhesive properties (quantitative and qualitative)
by analysis with the SEM and by dye penetration of several packable
materials in control by a traditional hybrid composite. Statistical
analysis of the results showed significant differences among the
tested materials. Surefil and Admira revealed the best adhesion to
enamel and dentin, while Definite and Solitaire demonstrated
inferior results. The control group Tetric ceram revealed for all
measured data values in the middle of the range of the tested
materials. The packable composites / ormocers comprise a rather
inhomogeneous class of materials. The measured values of adhesion
scatter in wide range. The use of these materials in stress –
bearing posterior cavities cannot be recommended in general.
Instead of amalgam substitutes they should be taken as amalgam
alternatives that still must be improved and assert themselves in
long - term clinical studies.
