You may remember the Industrial Revolution as that part of your
history text book where they started throwing numbers and
statistics at you. And while that of course is a fair way to
understand what happened when mechanisation transformed the way
people had worked for quite literally thousands of years, there are
things about the everyday life of people that has so far often
stayed hidden. Archaeologist Kieran Gleave (PhD Candidate in
Heritage Studies, Sidney Sussex College, University of Cambridge)
shows what the material record tells us about the lives of millions
who worked in factories under conditions which are unthinkable to
us today. It tells a story of large-scale transformation of economy
and peoples’ way of live, of human ingenuity but also poverty and
exploitation - and the heritage of this story that lives on to this
