How to turn passionate fans into ferocious haters

It's a phenomenon we have seen with many TV shows and other forms
of serial serial storytelling: the story is off to a great start
gaining passionate fans, but the ending turns them into an angry
mob of haters. How can this happen? And how can we avoid this as
authors?
